MAPLE LEAFS RE-SIGN WILGENIS ALVARADO
TORONTO - The Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball Club (@mapleleafsbaseball) have re-signed Left-Handed Pitcher Wilgenis Alvarado for the upcoming 2025 season.
Alvarado, a native of Aragua, Venezuela, burst onto the IBL scene in 2023 with the Maple Leafs, pitching to a 2.36 ERA in the regular season after coming over from the Blue Jays’ organization. That year, Alvarado won the Ted Earley Memorial Trophy for best pitcher while also being named as a Second-Team All-Star. In 2024, the lefty started 11 games for Toronto across the regular and postseason, including a 12-strikeout, 7 ⅓ Inning start against Barrie in the first round of the playoffs.
“We’re beyond thrilled to have Wilgenis back next season, he’s one of the best pitchers in the league when he’s on. We saw that, in 2023, just how dominant he can be when he works that slider to the best of his ability - match that with how he ended last year, he’s very resilient out there. It’s exactly what you want out of someone of his caliber, to be resilient and not let the moment become too big - we fully expect him to have a big, big year on the mound,” said the club.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a member of Canada’s best league, the Intercounty Baseball League. The over 100-year-old summer league is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the world, with the league established in 1919, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind.
